Making a Difference for the Earth & Each Other

With Winona LaDuke and Robert “Skip” Backus

Reaffirm your relationship with the earth and the human family in this month’s Omega Conversation with storyteller, fearless Indigenous activist, and two-time Green Party vice presidential candidate Winona LaDuke.

Winona is passionately working toward an economy that is ecologically sustainable, equitable, and just for us all. And her passion for the protection of the earth, water, and each other is contagious.

We are pleased to invite you to a conversation with Winona and Omega CEO Robert “Skip” Backus, Making a Difference for the Earth & Each Other, a free 1-hour Zoom gathering on Thursday, October 29 at 2:00 p.m. EDT.

In her talk with Skip, Winona will explore Indigenous wisdom and what it offers a culture that has lost its foundation—from water and food to restorative justice and the Seven Fires prophesies of her people. Winona will also answer questions from the Omega community.

We look forward to being there with you all.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Winona LaDuke, an Anishinaabekwe (Ojibwe) enrolled member of the Mississippi Band Anishinaabeg in northern Minnesota, is widely recognized for her work on environmental and human rights issues.

She has testified at the United Nations, US Congress, and state hearings, and is an expert witness on economics and the environment. Her work at the White Earth Land Recovery Project spans 30 years of legal, policy, and community development work, including the creation of one of the first tribal land trusts in the country.

Winona has been named Woman of the Year by Ms. magazine and has been inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.

She is the author of six books, including the recently released To Be a Water Protector: The Rise of the Wiindigoo Slayers.

Robert "Skip" Backus is the chief executive officer of Omega Institute, the United States' premier holistic learning center, offering innovative educational experiences that provide an integrated approach to personal and social change.

For more than 16 years as CEO, he has provided pivotal leadership to diversify and expand Omega's offerings—nearly doubling educational programming and staff. He has played a significant role in creating programs to support veterans, nonprofits, women leaders, and to bring yoga and mindfulness to underrepresented populations.

But perhaps his most visionary leadership is on behalf of the environment. He is the founder of the award-winning Omega Center for Sustainable Living and has recently launched the Omega Climate Initiative to advance existing and emerging solutions both at Omega and through partnerships around the world.
